WHY SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?

Jesus commanded it (Matthew 28:19-20)

  •       Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
  •       Baptism was not separated from the command to "obey all his teachings." It was not a good work to be done later at a new Christian's convenience. It was meant to be done to mark the beginning point of a person's spiritual journey.

The early church obeyed Jesus.

  •       In the Book of Acts, every single time someone became a Christian they were immediately baptized as a part of the conversion experience.

HOW SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?

The biblical method of baptism is immersion. Immersion means to "dip, plunge, or submerge completely under water."

Knowing many of us come from traditions where we were sprinkled-how can we know for sure that immersion is the way someone should be baptized?

Here are three reasons we know immersion is the form of baptism that is taught in the Bible:

1. There is no record of any person in the New Testament being baptized by sprinkling.
2. The word baptism in the original Greek language means "immersion".
Greek = baptizo "to completely dip or submerge"
Examples: dipping a garment into a pot of dye; sinking a ship
3. Christian leaders of other denominations, who sprinkle infants, nevertheless believed the biblical form of baptism was immersion.

Martin Luther (founder of the Lutheran Church)
"I would have those who are to be baptized entirely immersed as the word imparts."

John Calvin (founder of the Presbyterian Church)
"The word 'baptize' signifies to immerse. It is certain that immersion was the practice of the ancient church."

John Wesley (founder of the Methodist Church)
"Buried with him,' alludes to baptizing by immersion according to the cusom of the first church."

Catholic Dictionary
"In apostolic times the body of the baptized person was immersed, for St/ Paul looks on the immersion as typifying the burial with Christ, and speaks of baptism as a bath."

What if I was "sprinkled" as a child or adult?

  • Beacuase of the clear biblical diredction for baptism by immersion, we ask those who have been sprinkled to be immersed.
  • This does not invalidate the importance of what parents or spiritual mentors did for us, it is simply the next step in our spiritual journey. Immersion is a decision we make for ourselves.

Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ~Acts 2:38
